Yep, good old oranges. Orange power has to start with this citrus fruit that gave us the name for the colour orange. Orange oil has been part of folk medicine across Asia and Southern Europe for centuries. In fact, it’s a symbol of good fortune in China and used in traditional Chinese medicine. Orange oil is derived from the peel of oranges which are packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. They work to fight off free radicals from damaging our skin cells. The antioxidants in orange peel can brighten skin and reduce acne. They also can deflect some harmful UV rays. They also reduce the size of large pores, eliminate harmful bacteria, and enhance collagen production. They also plump up, smoothen out, and brighten the complexion.
This beauty is a common South Asian spice. It is not only used in South Asian cooking but also applied to the skin. In traditional Indian wedding ceremonies, it symbolises peace, happiness, health and new beginnings. A turmeric paste is applied to brides resulting in radiant skin. It’s not just a new beginning for the bride but also a new beginning for her new skin cells too!
In studies, turmeric has been found to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties that heal skin and can improve acne and eczema. It also has been found to prevent the production of melanin that causes dark pigmentation issues. It clarifies the complexion, improves the elasticity of the skin, reduces the production of excessive sebum that causes oily skin and locks in moisture to prevent skin dryness.
After the rose has lost its petals and dies, an edible reddish-orange fruit remains on the bush known as rosehip. It has been used in traditional Chinese and Native American medicinal preparations for various ailments. Ever heard of rosehip syrup? It used to be the main source of vitamin C supplementation in Britain after the second world war. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that scientific studies began to reveal the benefits of rosehip oil for the skin. They discovered it was an all-round winner for every skin type. High levels of unsaturated fatty acids mean that it is considered a dry oil. This means that it doesn’t leave a greasy residue on the skin. It reduces the size of enlarged pores, age spots, hyperpigmentation and it also improves skin laxity. It is also known as ‘oil of youth’ with its rich content of various essential fatty acids, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Cold-pressed Rosehip oil ensures that none of these highly valuable compounds are lost. High-Quality Rosehip oil is deep gold or reddish-orange in colour due to an antioxidant beta carotene which is a form of vitamin A. Beta carotene reduces the visible signs of ageing. It’s a superhero for sure!
