Uncertainty and feelings of helplessness become commonplace and we are constantly dealing with all kinds of stressful situations.

Unfortunately, stress produces the hormone cortisone that can trigger inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and acne. Stressed skin needs extra special care. With the huge changes we have encountered since lockdown our normal routines have been disrupted and for some of us, we may have just neglected our skincare rituals altogether. Being indoors can cause an increased buildup of dead skin cells due to changes in diet habits, like snacking more on sugary foods, and by increased moisture loss due to indoor heating etc. Stress also induces the production of excessive sebum that may clog pores with dead skin cells and create conditions for acne and inflamed skin.

Stress needn’t snatch all our joys. We can all actively take steps to improve our skin and give it the love and care it needs. Here are a few tips that can drastically improve troubled skin at home.

1. Drink Water.

Don’t skip this one! Water is needed to keep the skin hydrated and plump. Add some slices of lemon or cucumber to keep it exciting. If your water looks good you’ll trigger positive associations with drinking water and that’ll help you remember to drink.

2. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser twice a day.

This will keep your skin manageable and don’t forget to moisturise and use a good facial oil to seal it all in.

3. Exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells and improve circulation for brighter skin.

You can use rolled oats if you haven't got an exfoliator at hand by adding it to your normal cleanser.

4. Give your face a massage a few nights a week.

You don’t need to be a facial yoga master to benefit from a facial massage. Simply give your face a gentle massage to improve circulation for radiant skin and it’ll make you feel really good too! You can combine the facial massage with the application of your facial oil before bedtime.

If you can at least commit to these then you’ll find yourself doing more things to improve not only your skin but also your general wellbeing.
